The traditional divide between doing good and doing business is increasingly irrelevant. A new generation of social entrepreneurs in the Netherlands is demonstrating that it is possible to build financially sustainable organisations that also deliver profound social value.

What Is Social Entrepreneurship?

Social entrepreneurship refers to the practice of applying entrepreneurial principles โ€” innovation, efficiency, scalability, financial sustainability โ€” to the pursuit of social, environmental, or human rights goals. What distinguishes a social enterprise from a traditional charity is its commitment to financial sustainability through earned income. What distinguishes it from a traditional business is its explicit commitment to social mission as a primary driver.

The Dutch Context

The Netherlands has a strong tradition of cooperative enterprise and civil society engagement that creates fertile ground for social entrepreneurship. At the same time, the regulatory and financing landscape for social enterprises remains underdeveloped compared to countries like the UK, which has specific legal structures and tax incentives designed to support this sector.

Lessons for the NGO Sector

For traditional NGOs like Stichting NetImpact, the social entrepreneurship model offers important lessons. Developing earned income streams โ€” through training programmes, consultancy services, or digital products โ€” reduces dependency on grant funding and increases organisational resilience. Our CustoArt Studio partnership and NetImpact Academy programmes represent early steps in this direction, generating revenue that can be reinvested in our human rights and community empowerment mission.
